DRINK-SMART

Book Reviews

We review 3 books this month, all can be found at leading booksellers and online retailers. Check them out as part of your strategy to change your relationship with alcohol.

Try Dry by Alcohol Change Charity

Try Dry Picture The first book we review this month is Try Dry which is from the Alcohol Change Charity, who brought to us the Dry January app. This book is from Alcohol Change charity, the people behind the official Dry January campaign in the UK. It is written by experts at Alcohol Change and covers all the topics that are likely to come up when taking a month off booze, from planning and preparation to considering what to do after the month. It also has a foreword by comedian Lee Mack.

The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray

Unexpected Picture The second book this month is The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray. The appealing pitch of Catherine Gray’s book is that sober life is not just good for you, it’s actually better fun, too. Sobriety has had a bad rap, being equated since time immemorial with seriousness and dull, muted colours. In fact, sober life offers you the whole rainbow: rather than spending all day sleeping off your hangover. She writes about her addiction with admirable honesty, and in a tone that is light, bubbly and remarkably rarely annoying. It is impossible to disagree with her argument that our society is a booze-pusher, or that there are many health benefits to drinking less.

This Naked Mind by Annie Grace

Naked Mind Picture The last book this month is This Naked Mind by Annie Grace. The book examines the influence that alcohol has on our culture and society and reveals how the unconscious mind has been subjected to a lifetime of conditioning about the benefits of alcohol. It doesn't contain any rules, goals or scaremongering, but by exploring the reasons people drink and their fears that a life without alcohol will be boring or deprived, you will want to drink less or give up altogether by the time you've finished reading.
